(May 25, 2010) - Liberia Participates In The 6th Board Of Governors Meeting Of The RMU.
A five - man delegation from the Bureau of Maritime Affairs headed by Mr. Jonathan Shiancoe, Maritime Attaché at the Liberian Embassy in Accra, Ghana recently attended the 6TH Board of Governors meeting of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra, Ghana from the 25th - 28th May, 2010.

Speaking on behalf of Hon. Binyah C. Kesselly, Commissioner of the Bureau of Maritime Affairs, Republic of Liberia, Mr. Shiancoe announced that in support of Liberia’s resolve to timely honor her financial obligation to the RMU, it has paid in full, her annual contribution for the current year 2010. He informed the Board that Liberia has also made full payment of the apportioned initial seed money for the establishment and implementation of the RMU Endorsement Fund.
Touching on the Liberia Marine Training Institute (LMTI) in Marshall City, Margibi County Liberia, he informed member states of the RMU which include the Republics of Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone of Liberia’s current effort in rehabilitating the LMTI which is aimed at addressing the country’s human resource capacity, as well as, developing a national maritime work force.
For his part, the Board Chairman of the RMU and Minister of Transport, Republic of Cameroon, H.E. Bello Bouba Maigari thanked all the member states for their representations indicating that it serves as a testament of their commitment to work together in a Maritime University that will provide the opportunity to train Maritime personnel from Anglophone countries in the West and Central African region. He then, thanked Liberia and other member states for the prompt payments of their dues.
The Chairman concluded by also thanking the Rector and staff of the RMU for their hard work and laudable achievements of the University which is not only a center of excellence in Maritime education and training, but also a symbol of regional cooperation and unity.
The RMU is the product of the Regional Maritime Academy (RMA), Accra, Ghana. The institute was established in 1983 to provide relevant Maritime education and training of high quality and also to enhance the contribution of Maritime transport to the Socio- economic development of both the RMA and member states and the West and Central African Sub- region as a whole. The Ghana Nautical College (1957- 1983) was the forerunner to the RMA.
In order to meet the emerging technological challenges within the Maritime industry, it was decided that commencing from the 2003/2004 Academic year, some of the diploma courses would be upgraded and broadened to B.Sc. Degree level which would offer greater job opportunities to the graduates. The RMU which was launched in 2007 is jointly owned by five member states namely: The Republics of Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Apart from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other short courses, the institution offers the following programs for four (4) years each;
1. B. Sc. Marine Engineering
2. B. Sc. Marine Electrical/Electronics Engineering
3. B. Sc. Nautical Science
4. B. Sc. Maritime studies (Ports and Shipping Administration)
* 1-year MA in Ports and Shipping Administration in collaboration with the University of Ghana,
- * 2-year Higher Diploma in Ports and Shipping Management.
