(July 12, 2010) - Bureau of Maritime Affairs Identifies with West Point Fire Victims

Makes donation of US$ 5000.00 to school in New Kru Town

The Bureau of Maritime Affairs (“the BMA”)` has donated 25 bags of rice and pledged 15 bundles of zinc to the fire victims in West Point. The BMA also gave some money & candy to the children in the area.

Accompanied by officials of the Bureau, Commissioner Binyah Kesselly made the donation on July 9, 2010 in line with a mandate from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to reach out to communities and people in need. About 13 houses burned to ashes in this community on July 2, 2010 leaving over 125 people homeless.

In presenting the items, Commissioner Kesselly said that the donation was in line with of BMA’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program, which is aimed at looking out or providing for those in need. He told the fire victims to take courage and that this visit was not the end.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Community, the Commissioner of West Point, Rev. Demore thanked Commissioner Kesselly and praised he and his staff for the gesture. He said he was grateful to the BMA because this is the first entity to bring relief items to the people since the incident and he promised to distribute the items equally to the victims.

In brief remarks, BMA’s director for Social Corporate Responsibility, Ms. Ellen Ferguson admonished the people of West Point to be mindful of how they use candles which was the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, the BMA also visited the Sarwee Memorial Welfare Institute, a self-help school building project undertaken by the residents of the Borough of New Kru Town. During a tour of the school building which is under construction, Commissioner Kesselly pledged US$ 5000.00 towards the project.

According to the principal of the school, the amount needed to complete the project is US$ 20.000.00. He said funding for the construction of the 10-classroom building is generated through contributions from residents of the community. He thanked Commissioner Kesselly and the BMA staff for visiting the project and noted that their visit demonstrated to them that they are concerned about the educational welfare of their children.
