BMA Gives Mamba Point Beach a Facelift

February 19, 2009

The Commissioner of the Bureau of Maritime Affairs Binyah Kesselly has disclosed that the bureau will soon commence the cleaning of all major beaches throughout the country. He indicated that the nation’s beach sector should be one of the major attractions in Liberia for tourists.

Commissioner Kesselly made the statement on February 14, 2009 during a clean-up exercise of the beach opposite Cape Hotel at the diplomatic enclave of Mamba Point Monrovia. He said over the years, beaches in the country were not given much attention and called for a reverse of the situation. “All that we need to do,” he added, “is to make the sector of our economy attractive and this can only be achieved through the cooperation of community dwellers”

The Commissioner indicated that the country’s beaches should also be made as sources for employment for Liberians. “Our country has 350 miles of territorial coastline and the Gambia has only 37 miles of coastline beaches but in the Gambia are some of the major sources of revenue generation in that country,” he pointed out.

The maritime Chief said he was pleased that the clean up of the beach in Mamba Point, was not undertaken through the effort of his agency alone but through a proposal to the bureau by the Car Washer Association in Mamba Point. He, however, underscored the need for these kinds of innovative proposals and suggestions from community dwellers for improvement not only in the beach sector but also in other areas of development.

Concluding, the Commissioner disclosed that the bureau would shortly begin operation at the beach for recreation as soon as the necessary modalities are put in place and that the bureau will do everything within its reach and in collaboration with relevant government ministries and agencies to ensure that our beaches are clean and remain clean.
