Bureau of Maritime Affairs Identifies With Fire Victims.
As Its Corporate Giving Program Intensifies.
(February 3, 2010) - The Bureau of Maritime Affairs on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 identified with victims of a fire disaster in the Saye Town Community of Sinkor, a suburb of Monrovia. The fire which engulfed the congested community is said to have left over 200 persons homeless early Monday morning. Report gathered from the scene of the incident said fire destroyed several homes.
According to the fire victims who spoke with a BMA staff, the incident occurred when a resident from one of the affected houses left a burning candle in his room while others were asleep. The candle later came in contact with some combustible materials; thereby, setting them ablaze. The fire later engulfed the structure and spread to nearby houses.
Although no one got killed or burned but many persons including women and children were victimized during the incident and all of their belongings were destroyed. Several victims from the Saye Town fire incident have called on the government, Local and International Non- Governmental Organizations and other Philanthropy Organizations to come to their aid. The victims said they have lost all they have worked for over the years. Speaking to the victims’ the following day, Commissioner Kesselly extended his profound sympathy to the victims and assured them of the BMA's contribution through the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) to assist them with their immediate needs.
Meanwhile, the BMA through the Director of the Corporate Social Responsibility Section, Ms. Ellen Ferguson presented food and other items to the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNCRS) for onward distribution to victims of the fire disaster. Making the presentation on behalf of the BMA Commissioner, Ms. Ferguson said it was the Bureau's way of saying sorry to those affected and assured the LNCRS that the BMA stands in readiness to be a partner to Liberian citizens in the event of a disaster.
