(November 17, 2010) - Maritime Commissioner Kesselly Cautions Youths Against Making Reckless Statements.

Liberia Maritime Authority Commissioner Binyah C. Kesselly has encouraged over 400 young Liberians to desist from making reckless statements which have the propensity to breed war and destruction. Serving as keynote speaker at the official opening of the 3rd youth conference in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County, Commissioner Kesselly declared that statement made without evidence or substantial backing were equivalent to irresponsibility.

He cautioned the youths to refrain from such attitudes in the best interest of Liberia. Speaking on the theme “Be a Responsible Citizen”, Commissioner Kesselly presented seven virtues as qualities required to be responsible citizens. The virtues included Nationalism, Patriotism, Accountability (Transparency), Self- pride, Sense of ownership, Sense of community, and self -reliance (self – struggle)

The official opening was launched by the Deputy Minister for Youth Development, Sam Hare. Mr. Hare cautioned the youths to be proactive and make Liberia their main agenda as they discuss the challenges facing youth development and make recommendations during the 4- day conference.

Also participating in the program was the superintendent of Grand Cape Mount County, Catherine Watson-Khasu who reiterated and stressed on the virtues outlined by Commissioner Kesselly. She encouraged the youths to make the deliberations rewarding.

The 3rd National Youth Conference was organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY). Some of the issues discussed at the conference included Youth Leadership, Youth Empowerment, Youth Volunteerism, Drug Abuse and Crime and HIV/AIDS.

Other issues discussed were social behavior, responsible citizenship, the rule of law, youth and engineering and sports and recreation. Acting Youth and Sports Minister Sam Hare Jr., FLY President Augustus Zayzay, representatives from the Population Services International (PSI) and the National Aids Control Program served as facilitators.

The second part of the conference was the dedication of a modern Youth Resource Center built under the program for youth empowerment and employment. The Ministry of Youth and Sports, with support from the International Labor Organization (ILO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Bank, UNFPA, UNESCO and UNMIL also contributed to the construction of the center.
